HARRISON COUNTY ENHANCED 9 1 1 BACKGROUND SPECIAL CONDITIONS FORM ________________________________________________________________ BACKGROUND An ordinance establishing a uniform numbering system for
houses and structures located within the county of Harrison was adopted May 4, 1992 by the
Commissioners of Harrison County. (The commissioners who signed this ordinance were J
Frederick Royse, Edward B Sieg, and Terry L Miller.) The primary provisions of this
ordinance are as follows: The general rule shall be 1,000 addresses per mile, except
in certain areas where the irregular direction of the county highways makes variations
necessary, and except in buffer areas adjacent to incorporated cities or towns. Even
numbers shall be on the north and east sides of roads and odd numbers on the south and
west. The grid system used is constructed on a North, South, East and West basis using the
line separating Range 3 East and Range 4 East as the east west divider and the line
separating Township 3 South and Township 4 South as the north south divider. The starting
point of "O" (zero) for this grid system is at the intersection of the above
mentioned lines south of the Town of Corydon. The posting of house numbers is required as follows: The owner or occupant of a house or structure located
within Harrison County shall post officially assigned numbers in English, using Arabic
(not Roman) numerals in a location providing easy identification from the abutting street
or road. Such numbers shall be a minimum of three (3) inches in height, made of durable,
weatherproof material, and be a color made to stand out distinctly against its background.
Such official number may be attached to a mailbox ( according to postal regulations), or
on a post, outside light, or any prominent place on the house or structure so that the
number is identifiable. Provided, however, that if the building is not visible from a road
or is more than 200 feet from a road, the number shall be displayed at the entrance to the
access road or driveway to such building by means of a separate marker or on a mailbox.
Whenever the number is placed on any object other than the structure itself, it shall be
positioned to allow the address of the structure to be readily identified from any
direction of travel.
